Translating complex science

Sensu has a long-standing tradition of working with first-rate scientists, helping to translate their complex science into accessible narratives. The Adaptive Response project, for which we collaborated with the University of Groningen’s MARM Group, was no different. It allowed us to dive into the intricacies of organism adaptation, conveying just how much we can learn from nature’s teachings through the study of data.

“Thank you ever so much – I am exceedingly pleased with this outcome! Despite the logistical challenge we faced, the final result is all that truly matters.”

How nature teaches us to adapt

The short film delves into our understanding of how organisms adapt to novel environments, the relevance of which is palpable in an era of rapid climate change. Bringing together stunning wildlife footage and lab shots with animated scenes and data simulations, it explores the underlying mechanisms behind behavioural shifts known as adaptive responses.

From bacteria to elephants

We needed to seamlessly combine the world of hardcore life science and the beauty of nature. From tiny organisms and biofilms to the hunting patterns of big mammals and impressive natural landscapes – many of which were captured by our creative director Jesper while visiting Yellowstone. This conceptual choice mirrors the research project’s holistic approach.

Illustrating the role of data

The project introduces innovative methodologies, drawing from information theory and artificial intelligence. Our film encapsulates the project's multifaceted approach to understanding adaptive responses in organisms. The end result inspires curiosity, about both the mysteries of nature and the pioneering techniques through which she can be studied.
